Life Transitions Therapy

Struggling to adjust to a recent life change or an ongoing life transition?

Have you experienced a drastic or sudden life change that has you feeling stressed, overextended or overwhelmed? Does divorce, caring for an ill family member, or moving have you feeling like you lost a part of your identity? Maybe you started a new job, added a baby to the family or all of your children recently moved out of the home? Some changes can be exciting and easy to adjust to, while other transitions can make you feel worried, unprepared, and stressed.

Changes in life may have you questioning your purpose and your goals. You might feel like you are wandering through life, like something is missing or your balance is “off”.  You may feel like there are many things to manage and your forever growing “to do list” leaves you feeling completely overwhelmed. To top it off you may be finding yourself constantly stuck in your head with thoughts you can’t seem to stop, which may be impacting your ability to sleep. You may be having a difficult time concentrating, have appetite changes, and are more easily irritated and anxious. These are just some examples of things someone dealing with a life transition may experience, all of which can be addressed with life transitions therapy.

Sometimes life sucks. Perhaps right now, is one of those times.

Even if you are really struggling with a change in your life I want you to know that nothing is wrong with you. What you are experiencing is normal and it’s okay to ask for help. We all experience changes throughout life.  Sometimes these transitions can knock us on our butt, while others are easy to navigate and overcome. Changes and transitions are an unavoidable part of life, but it doesn’t mean they are always easy to transition into or adjust to.  Even changes that are seen by others as good and positive can cause someone to feel distressed.  If you are going through a difficult time right now, you are capable of overcoming your current challenges.  Reaching out for help can provide you with the support and encouragement you need.

You may have friends and family who are there to support you, but sometimes it’s difficult to talk to them without feeling judged, or getting unsolicited recommendations and solutions. Perhaps you feel like you don’t have anyone to talk to because a loved one is experiencing the same thing, but they seem to be doing well and aren’t struggling. This is where counseling can help. Although you might feel embarrassed to open up about what you’re really going through, counseling provides a non-judgmental space for you to talk freely about what is bothering you.

Navigate life’s challenges with ease

Although right now you might be feeling hopeless about things improving, change is possible. You are capable of overcoming your current challenges. As a life transition counselor I’ve helped individuals overwhelmed by life’s circumstances find their way to feeling less stressed, more calm, and capable of achieving their goals again.

To help you overcome the distress you are experiencing I will first need to learn what your challenges are. Through hearing your story, I will start to get a picture of what your struggles are and from there we can begin working on your goals and any immediate concerns you have, like managing difficult emotions and challenging life situations. The approach I will use to help you, will be tailored to meet your specific needs.  There is not a “one size fits all” method of doing therapy.  During counseling sessions you may learn new skills such as breathing exercises, grounding skills, and ways to be more present. I will help you process your experiences, emotions, and thoughts. I can also help you point out the blind spots that we are sometimes unaware of.

I’ve had a lot of success helping individuals who are struggling with life’s demands feel like their real self again and reduce their stress and overwhelming emotions.  Working with me, you can gain the practical tools you need to discover ways to cope with difficult life stuff, and move through difficult life experiences.

You think life transitions therapy could help but have some concerns or questions?

Doesn’t therapy cost a lot of money?

Investing in therapy is investing in you and your long term well-being, health, and future. Therapy can cost you out of pocket expenses, however the goal of therapy is for you to learn how to live a more satisfied life and be able to deal with whatever life throws your way. Research has also shown that untreated and long term stress can contribute to serious health problems. With improved mental health, you will feel healthier and be able to be more productive. Allowing you to flourish in your personal and professional life.

I recommend you find a therapist you really click with. Ask yourself as you work with them if it’s helping and if you’re getting everything you need out of therapy.  It is important that you feel you are getting your money’s worth.

But isn’t counseling time consuming? I don’t think I have time.

I get it. You already have time constraints and don’t feel like you have time for anything extra. However, are you performing at your best and giving your best self right now?  Taking care of yourself is important. If you keep pushing your own needs aside and don’t get the support you need, you may continue to feel like you’re running on empty.

How often someone attends therapy depends on their own unique needs. Typically it can be anywhere from once every week to once every two weeks, for 50 minutes. Talking one hour a week to work on yourself could lead to you being healthier and more like your real self again.

Shouldn’t I be able to deal with this on my own?

It doesn’t matter how small or big the life change you are experiencing is or whether it was sudden or drastic, what you are experiencing is real. Everyone deals with transitions in life differently and more people than you know may be struggling with something similar to you.  Due to the stigma that exists in our society around mental health, you may not know these people with their struggles exist.  Many people find life overwhelming when there’s too much on their plate. Therapy can help you process all of the changes occurring in your life and learn how to regain the balance you are searching for.
